Community College Placement Test Information

If LCC, LBCC (or any community college) is on your list of potential schools or training programs, you’ll need to take some placement tests.  Just as the name implies, these tests determine into which classes you’ll initially be placed at the Community College of your choice. Your scores should pre-qualify you for classes that are neither too difficult nor too easy. Like Goldilocks’s porridge, you’ll place into classes that are “just right.” The thing is, if your scores are low, you may be required to take classes designed to bring your reading, writing and math skills up to college levels before you can start taking freshman-level courses — and those classes may not be eligible for financial student aide. YOU’LL WANT TO DO YOUR BEST AND PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME.  Students who practice ahead of time can raise their scores an average of TWO course levels.  This could save you hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars!

EHS will be offering both the LCC and LBCC Placement Exams here at EHS in Lab 10 on Tuesday, April 19th and Tuesday, May 24th from 2:30pm-6pm.

Additional documentation is required for LBCC Placement Tests- Please plan ahead to make sure you are able to test on the day you select. Sign-up is available in the EHS Counseling Center NOW!

The Sub Pop Loser Scholarship!

Sub Pop Records in Seattle, WA is offering a grand total of $15,000 worth of college scholarship money to three eligible high school seniors. There are three scholarships—one for $7,000, one for $5,000 and one for $3,000. As longtime and proud losers ourselves, we’re exceedingly happy to be able, in some small way, to help further the education of art-enthused misfits from the NW.

Applicants must be a resident of Washington or Oregon, and a graduating senior on your way to full-time enrollment at an accredited university or college. We are looking for applicants who are involved and/or interested in music and/or the creative arts in some way. However, you do not need to be pursuing an education in the arts.

To apply you must submit an essay, one page or less, using any combination of the following questions as a guide (or write something completely your own, be inspired and creative!). Please list the school you are graduating from and the school you plan to attend in the fall at the top of your essay along with your contact information.

– What are you doing in the arts/music field in your community?

– What does being a Sub Pop ‘Loser’ mean to you?

– What are your influences and/or who inspired you to become involved in the arts?

– Describe your biggest failure and explain how it has brought you closer to your goal(s).

– Discuss a special attribute or accomplishment that sets you apart.

– How has your family or community background affected the way you see the world?

Applicants are strongly encouraged to send digital links and/or provide hard copies of their artwork along with their essay (we have never had a winner who submitted only an essay). However, please be aware that Sub Pop will not return any of this material, so please don’t send originals. Sub Pop will give equal opportunity to all applicants who fit the criteria outlined above.

DEADLINE:

The deadline for applications is Sunday, March 20th.

Please send all submissions and attachments to scholarship@subpop.com by March 20th, 2016. We will announce the scholarship winners on April 12th.

Good luck, Losers!

Changes for the Elmira High School PSAT/NMSQT for 2015

The PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, a practice SAT exam that gives students a great opportunity to measure their skills in correlation to the SAT college entrance exam, propel them towards greater college and career readiness, and serves as an entry point to millions in scholarship dollars.

In past years, Elmira High School has hosted the PSAT on a Saturday test date. This year, with the updates Collegeboard is implementing with the SAT in the spring of 2016, the PSAT is only being offered on a school day, Wednesday, October 14th starting at 8:20 a.m. Students will be released from testing around 12:00 p.m. and are expected to return to their regular class schedule for the day.

With this opportunity, EHS is requiring that all sophomores participate in PSAT testing at no cost. We continue to encourage our juniors to sign-up at a test fee of $10 per student. Sophomores and parents of sophomore students do not need to sign up for the test. They will automatically be added to our test role sheet. Juniors still interested in signing up, please see Mrs. Boytz, EHS Bookkeeper for payment and registration. ALL sophomores on an IEP have the opportunity to opt. out of testing. In this case, please speak to your student’s case manager.

PSAT/NMSQT Student Study Guides will start being distributed throughout the next week. This guide will serve to help you and your students understand more about the benefits of the PSAT, some sample questions for what to expect on the exam, and a list of information to help prepare students for test day.

Should you have any questions before then, please reach Meagan Haas, School Counselor at (541)935-8200. You may also reach Meagan by email at mhaas@fernridge.k12.or.us .

We are pleased to announce the eighth year of the Kaiser Permanente Health Care Career Scholarship Program! This year, we will continue to offer a scholarship to at least one qualified student at each eligible high school. In addition, up to 25 percent of the scholarships awarded will be for $5,000 or $10,000.

The deadline to apply is Wednesday, January 13, 2016, 5 p.m. Pacific time.

In addition, during the week of October 5, your school will receive packets containing posters and materials to help inform students about the scholarship.

APPLICATION: The application can be accessed by clicking here or pasting the below link into your browser: kp.org/communitybenefit/scholarship/nw  (Just scroll down a bit and click the “Scholarship Application” link under the “For applicants” heading)

NEW THIS YEAR:
Elimination of a separate letter of recommendation. In the past, applicants needed to obtain a nomination from a teacher/counselor and a letter of recommendation from a different individual. To simplify the process, we have eliminated the separate letter of recommendation. Now applicants need only a teacher/counselor nomination.

Enhanced nomination process. As soon as the applicant has entered the teacher/counselor nominator’s email address into the application, the nominator will receive an email with instructions for confidentially submitting the nomination online. The applicant will not be able to submit his/her application until the nominator has submitted the nomination.  Click here for nomination instructions.

Good Luck!

Scholarship MoneyFile Your FAFSA!!!

SENIORS: Remember to file your Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2015-2016 school year (attending college or training program from fall 2015-summer 2016).   You will need to file this application EVEN IF YOU DON’T THINK YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR FEDERAL GRANTS, because colleges and universities use this as a basis for scholarships and private grant funding.

If you gather up the necessary records, it will only take about 1/2 hour to 45-minutes to complete your FAFSA application. FAFSA on the Web will guide you through the questions that you must answer, and if necessary you can save your application and return to it later if you don’t immediately have the information you need to answer any of the questions.

You’ll be estimating as closely as possible your financial information for 2014 by using your 2013 (last year’s) tax forms, your final pay stubs for 2014 (this year), and your most recent bank and investment statements.  Click HERE for more hints about how to figure things like your taxable income and also the 2014 tax tables.

It’s not hard or tricky… you just need to go through the steps! (If you don’t have your PIN yet, it’s okay. You’ll just need to apply for one at the end of your FAFSA application, and choose the “display now” option, so you don’t have to wait for an email confirmation to do the final submission.)

college.ahead  Placement Testing Study Guide

If LCC (or any community college) is on your list of potential schools or training programs, you’ll need to take some placement tests.  Just as the name implies, these tests determine into which classes you’ll initially be placed at LCC. Your scores should pre-qualify you for classes that are neither too difficult nor too easy. Like Goldilocks’s porridge, you’ll place into classes that are “just right.”  The thing is, if you scores are low, you may be required to take classes designed to bring your reading, writing and math skills up to college levels before you can start taking freshman-level courses — and those classes may not be eligible for financial student aide. YOU’LL WANT TO DO YOUR BEST AND PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME.  People who practice ahead of time can raise their scores an average of TWO course levels.  This could save you hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars!

FREE Practice Questions:
http://www.dcccd.edu/emp/departments/ea/student%20affairs/assessment%20practice%20tests/accuplacer/pages/accu_prac_tests.aspx – This site will tell you if you chose the correct or incorrect answers, but not why the answer was or wasn’t correct.

InterestedPractice for Your LCC Reading Comprehension & Sentence Skills Placement  Exams

It Is Still Important To File (or correct) Your FAFSA!

You will need to file your FAFSA EVEN IF YOU DON’T THINK YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR FEDERAL GRANTS, because colleges and universities use this as a basis for scholarships and private grant funding.  If you have already filed with estimated figures, remember that you will need to go back and make corrections with the actual 2013 tax numbers.  It will only take about 1/2 hour to 45-minutes to complete your FAFSA application.  It’s not hard or tricky… you just need to go through the steps! Click HERE to start your 2014-2015 FAFSA application.

File Your FAFSA Starting On January 1st!

SENIORS: Remember to file your Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning January 1st for the 2014-2015 school year (attending college or training program from fall 2014-summer 2015). You’ll be estimating as closely as possible your financial information for 2013 by using your 2012 (last year’s) tax forms, your final pay stubs for 2013 (this year), and your most recent bank and investment statements. It’s not hard or tricky… you just need to go through the steps!  (If you don’t have your PIN yet, it’s okay.  You’ll just need to apply for one at the end of your FAFSA application, and choose the “display now” option, so you don’t have to wait for an email confirmation to do the final submission.) Click HERE to start your 2013-2014 FAFSA application. En Español Aquí: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/es_ES

Still want some more FAFSA help or information?   Here is a fun, easy to use, super-informative site:   http://www.collegeup.org/Pages/default.aspx  with TONS of answers to your questions like “Which parents needs to report with me?” and “What assets need to be reported, and which do not?” plus much, much more.

Remember to visit colleges to discover the best place for you!

All colleges and universities welcome you and your family. They understand that you need to spend some time on campus to know if that is the right school for you.  Contact the schools in which you are interested to arrange a tour, eat in the cafeterias, and maybe even spend the night in a dorm!  Here are just a sampling of what’s coming up in our area: college smallLinn-Benton Community College Friday A.T.T.
