Good evening,

Elmira High School was notified today of a student testing positive for COVID-19.  The District Nurse has been working with Lane County in looking at this case. What has been found is that this case did not come in contact with another positive COVID-19 person at the high school during the school day.  This is not a school contact.

Although the student was in class this week, the District Nurse has checked with the staff and all safety protocols were followed. Lane County has directed that if students maintain the 3 feet distance, wear a mask and wash their hands, a classroom or cohort does not need to quarantine.  The District Nurse and the High School will be notifying the parents who have students in the same classroom so those parents can monitor their student for any symptoms.

If you have questions you may contact the District Nurse at tparsons@fernridge.k12.or.us.

The schools have many protocols in place to help protect your student during the school day. However, the school cannot monitor students outside of school. Please help the school keep students in school by encouraging them to wear their mask and keep 3 feet apart even when they are out with their friends.

On Friday, April 30th Lane County will be moving back to the Extreme Risk category.  Unfortunately this will require us to greatly limit the number of spectators allowed at our athletic events.  Beginning on Friday we will need to limit home and visiting spectators to two per participant.  We hope that this is a temporary measure and look forward to getting back to allowing a greater number of fans at our athletic contests.

As we have already shared (in a previous post), there is an opportunity for students 16 and older to sign up for a Pfizer vaccine at LCC this weekend, April 24th and 25th from 9:00-3:00 pm at LCC.  This clinic is by appointment only, please go to http://lanecounty.org/vaxclinics to schedule your vaccine.  The district is not involved in this opportunity at all, we are just sharing the information.

NEW OPPORTUNITY:  On Thursday, April 29th, EHS has 60 slots for students at the Bethel Health Clinic to receive the Pfizer vaccine.  This will be a “field trip” for the first 60 students that sign up.  Students need to be 16+ years old, and MUST HAVE signed parent permission slip.  Sign-ups take place beginning tomorrow morning.  Once the 60 slots are filled, we close registration. Below is the important information:

WHEN:  Students must be at EHS on Thursday, April 29th prepared to load a school bus at 8:15. The bus will leave by 8:25.  We expect the bus to return between 10:30 and 10:45.

WHERE:  We will be going to the Bethel Health Clinic on the Willamette H.S. campus.

WHAT:  Students will receive the first of 2 COVID-19 Pfizer vaccines.  The 2nd dose appointment will be scheduled 21 days later, on Thursday, May 20th, also from 9-10 AM.  We we will have the same procedure in place for the transportation/field trip.

PERMISSION SLIP:  In order to board the bus, a signed parent permission slip is required.  The permission slips will be available to the students that signed up, in the EHS front office, beginning tomorrow.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?: Sign-ups begin at 7:30 AM, tomorrow morning, April 23rd!  You can sign up by coming to the front office at EHS, or by calling the EHS office beginning at 7:30 AM at 541-935-8200.  If calling, DO NOT leave a message.  We will have three people taking calls. If the line is busy, continue to try.  The information needed to sign up include, Student Name–Parent name–Parent Contact number.

Lane County Public Health will be holding a vaccine clinic for people 16 to 17 years old.

Where: Lane Community College

When: April 24 and 25 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

What: 2,400 doses of Pfizer will be made available for those 16 to 17 years old.  Additional doses will be made available to the general public.

How: This clinic is by appointment only, please go to http://lanecounty.org/vaxclinics to schedule your vaccine appointment.

Important: All Lane County Public Health clinics are free.  You do not need insurance and will not be asked for any financial information

We recently received a reminder from the OSAA about the requirement that all participants in OSAA sponsored activities wear a mask.  We want to remind everyone that spectators are included as participants in these events and that OSAA and Elmira High School mandates that anyone in attendance at our athletic events wear a mask even outdoors.  We are working as hard as we can to allow as many spectators as possible at our athletic events, but that will be a challenge if we have issues with mask compliance.  Please help us out by wearing your mask and being respectful of the people who are being asked to enforce these rules.

April 13, 2021

Dear EHS Families,

Recently, we were notified that a person in the school community tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. We understand that this might raise concerns, alongside a caring response.

While we are not able to share personally-identifiable information, we care about keeping our community informed.

Each situation calls for different protocols. In this case:

  1. The school was notified on April 12, 2021 that a member of the community had tested positive.
  2. The person who tested positive has not been in the school during the time they would be considered infectious.

The District has been in contact with the  Lane County Public Health Department and is following the recommendations from the County.

  1. The person is staying at home and self-isolating.
  2. There was no contact at the school during the time the person could spread the virus. This eliminates the need to do contact tracing/notification in the school.

The District continues to follow all of the safety protocols including all persons entering the school building wearing a face covering/mask, maintaining the 3-6 ft distancing and encouraging hand hygiene.

Keeping COVID-19 out of the schools and the students in school takes everyone in the Community.  The best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is by wearing a face covering, staying 3-6 feet from others, practicing good health habits which includes washing your hands and staying home if sick.

Because any medical information is considered confidential, the District will provide information related to a positive case, only to people who may be impacted by a positive case within the District.

More information can be found on the Oregon Department of Education’s Ready Schools, Safe Learners page, and the Oregon Health Authority’s COVID-19.

As many FRSD families may have heard by now, the U.S. Department of Education recently denied the Oregon Department of Education’s request for a waiver of summative testing for the 2020-2021 school year. Due to this decision, the Fern Ridge School District is currently beginning the process of readying our staff and students for state assessments.

ODE’s window for state assessments is April 13-June 11, however, each individual school will set their own testing dates within that window. Due to the nature of this school year, ODE has shortened the blueprint and the time each assessment takes, as well as reducing the number of required assessments at each grade level. The table of required assessments, optional assessments, and approximate test time frame is below. All students will have the opportunity to take all available grade level assessments.

If families do not want their child(ren) to participate in state assessments this year, the link to opt-out of the Math and ELA assessments is below. Please fill out and return to your child’s school as soon as possible. They will be accepted until the day before testing begins (dates vary by school). Science has a separate student exemption procedure. See note below for an explanation of that process. If you are not opting your child out, your child will participate in the required (not optional) state testing with their grade level. If you wish for your child to participate in the optional assessment opportunity, please contact your child’s teacher and/or school.

Thank you for your continued support!

Information on Exemption from Science Assessment from ODE’s Website:

Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) 581-022-1910 allows school districts to excuse students from a state required program or learning activity, including state testing, to accommodate a student’s disabilities or religious beliefs. This rule governs exemption requests for the state tests in Science and Social Sciences, the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA21), and the Kindergarten Assessment.

  • Are there eligibility requirements? Yes. Parents may request exemptions under OAR 581-022-1910 based on the student’s disability or religion.
  • What is the process for a parent to make this request? The authority to exempt students from state testing belongs to local school districts. In order for a school district to excuse a student from testing under Oregon law, the student’s parent or guardian must submit a written request to the school district listing the reasons for the exemption and proposing an alternative individualized learning activity for the student that meets the same goals that would be accomplished by participation in state testing. Appropriate school personnel must evaluate and approve the parent request.
