Kids ReadingSMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is an important program here at Veneta that promotes early childhood literacy. Our SMART volunteers share their love of books with primary students. By listening to them read and reading to them, they help struggling readers gain important reading skills and build self-confidence. Not only do the 42 children who participate benefit from the amazing relationships they build with their SMART volunteers, they also receive free books through the SMART program. SMART is currently seeking more volunteers. If you know of people that might want to be a SMART reader, contact Sue Craig at 541-607-0204.

Students participating in SMART recently voted on their favorite books. The wonderful “There is a Bird on Your Head” came in first with “Pete the Cat” a close second. “Penguins” rounded out the top three. The next time you are looking for something to read, check out these favorites. And if you are looking for a way to give back to the community, think about being a SMART reader.
