Weather forecasts for Thursday are calling for rain and the likelihood of thunderstorms in the afternoon. We do not want students and families on the field during a thunderstorm for obvious safety reasons. So we are opting to stay safe and make changes to our Field Day Schedule. Events will be either in the building or under the covered area. We are also shifting the time for the morning Field Day, starting earlier so we have time to set up for lunch. Field Day for 3rd thru 5th grade classes will start at 8:15 and end at 10:12. Field Day for Kindergarten thru 2nd grade classes will start at 12:10 and end at 2:07. There are no changes to the lunch schedule. Continue reading

Grafitti Update:

It appears as if Veneta Elementary School was one of several locations in our community that were tagged over the weekend. The other locations included a local church, Territorial Park, and the city pool. The fact that other locations were hit would seem to indicate that whoever did this was out to cause mischief and not targeting Veneta Elementary School.

However, we have taken several steps to increase student safety. We have asked the Sherrif’s Department to be a more visible presence at the school including increased patrols of our area throughout the school day. We will also increase the number of staff present during arrival and dismissal times. Finally, we are making periodic security checks of the exterior and the interior throughout the day.

Our normal practice is to keep our exterior doors locked with the exception of the main entrance. However now that we have our new entrance, the second set of interior doors are also kept locked during the school day. This means that anyone coming into the building has to come through the office.

The bulk of the graffiti itself was removed within an hour of it being discovered, except for the few locations where it needed to be painted over.   A huge thank you to Greg Baker and Mike Guill who took on the task of removing the graffiti in the 90 degree plus weather Sunday.

On June 5th,  VES Staff discovered that VES had been tagged with graffiti on multiple windows and exterior walls. Included with the obscenities and symbols in the graffiti were the words “time to die.” The Sherrif’s Department investigated and determined that there was very little cause for concern.

Student safety is extremely important to us. We feel strongly that VES, especially with our new entrance, is a secure building and a safe place for all of our students and staff. Student safety is important and we will put some extra precautions in place for the next few days.

However, if families are concerned and choose to keep their children home based on that concern, we respect and appreciate that decision. We just ask that you let us know so we can excuse their absence.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us at 541-935-8225. Olivia Johnson, VES Principal.

kits_xsm  Fern Ridge School District still has space in their KITS (Kids In Transition To School) Program for this summer and fall. Open to students who will be enrolled in kindergarten in either Elmira or Veneta Elementary Schools this fall, KITS helps to strengthen academic, social, and emotional skills to help students  be successful in school. In addition to working with students, KITS also works with parents through a parent support group which will offer strategies and ideas for parents to help their child transition into school.

KITS classes will take place either 9 AM to 11 AM  or 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer from July 5th to August 25th. In the fall, KITS meets once a week on Mondays from 2:30 to 4:30. The parent group meets once a week during the summer, and every other week during the fall. Childcare and refreshments are provided at no cost during the parent group. Snacks are provided to the students during the KITS session.

There is no cost for the KITS program and transportation is provided. Registration closes June 10th. For more information, contact Olivia Johnson at 541-935-8225.

Students who raised $50 or more for our recent auction will participate in a field trip to Territorial Park on Friday, June 3rd. We will be leaving Veneta around 1:00 and returning around 2:15. PALS will be providing popsicles. It will be 87 degrees so if your child earned this trip and will be going, you may want to send them with sunglasses or a hat or put suntan lotion on them. We will provide bottled water.

Please note if either the 5th grade track meet or the 3rd grade field trip run late, we will schedule another trip to the park for those students next week.

With the end of the school year just a few weeks away, there is a lot happening at Veneta Elementary School. We have put together a list of upcoming events for families to refer to.  Thank youImportant_information_logo
