Cooking, cleaning, fixing, typing, driving, scheduling and supporting students… classified school employees do it all! From the time they get on the bus in the morning to when they head home at the end of the day, students are surrounded by caring classified professionals who keep them safe and help them learn. Now, it’s time to thank the employees who keep schools running.
Classified School Employees Week is March 2-6, 2020!
Please join FRMS in saying “High Five for Classified!” Classified School Employees Week celebrates the critical, and often unrecognized, work that classified workers do for Oregon schools and students. Jim Skeen Youth Sailing Scholarship: The Family and Friends of Jim Skeen are sponsoring a sailing scholarship for FRMS students who are interested in learning how to sail this summer and want to attend the Eugene Yacht Club Sail School. Students will enjoy sailing instruction from June 21st to July 26th at Fern Ridge Lake. The instruction is very much hands on and students will get a chance to sail on the lake. Applications will be available in the office and the deadline for returning them to FRMS is Friday, March 20th.
Students who have gone through this program in past summers have really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun. The scholarship also includes a Junior Membership in the Eugene Yacht Club, sailing activities during the school year, and special youth sailing events.

Below is a letter that will be in the front office of all schools tomorrow. Please read, share, and pass along. The topic is youth suicide, and how together we can support students and families. The link at the bottom is to a document that has contact information for a wide variety of services in Lane County. There is also a link to a PDF version of this letter.
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
At Fern Ridge there has been a great deal of conversation and concern about suicide recently. We cannot comment on any specific students or events, but we do know that some students and parents may find this very distressing. Since the subject has been raised, we want to take this opportunity to make sure that parents have the information they need to understand how to support their children and get them connected to helpful resources. In addition, we want students and families know that district staff are here to support them in any way we can.
Suicide is a very complicated act. No one single thing causes it. But in many cases, a mental health condition is part of it, and these conditions are treatable. It’s really important that if you think your child is not feeling well and is potentially thinking about suicide, that you check in with them and encourage them to reach out for help and share how they’re feeling. Asking your child if they are suicidal will not put the idea in their head. It will actually provide significant relief to them if they are feeling that much pain.
I am including some resources that may be helpful to you in discussing suicide with your child and information on local behavioral healthcare providers. Members of our Crisis Response Team are also available to meet with students individually today, as well as over the coming days and weeks. Please contact the school office if you feel your child is in need of additional assistance. If you or your child needs help right away, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or the Lane County Child’s Crisis Response Program 1-888-989-9990. These programs can be sources of information and provide helpful services for parents. If you feel there is an imminent threat dial 911, or take your child to the nearest emergency department.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me, or the professionals at the school. Each building’s contact information is below.
Professionally,

Just a reminder that our Second Quarter Gold Star Dance will be Friday, February 14th from 6:30 to 8:00. Only students who earned a spot on the Second Quarter Gold Star Dance will be able to attend. To earn a spot, students had to have no detentions, referrals, or bus citations. They also had to attend school 90% of the time. Only students on the Gold Star list can attend- no guests. Admission is free but refreshments will be sold. As per our standard policy, students must be at school all day on Friday in order to attend the dance Friday evening.
If your child did not make the Second Quarter Gold Star list, they have a chance to earn a spot on the 3rd Quarter Gold Star list with great behavior between January 27th and April 2nd.
Click the link below for information about Applegate Regional Theatre’s “Our History” project for 6th through 12th students from Fern Ridge, Crow, or Lorane.
Thank you to Dalen Corbett and the KEZI Eugene Boat and Sportsman Show for bringing the Birdman Bird Show to FRMS Students. Students were able to get a close up look at a falcon, a African bateuleur eagle, and learn more about the world of falconry. The Birdman Bird Show will be a featured event at the Boat and Sportsman Show taking place this weekend at the Lane Events Center.
Congratulations to the 241 Fern Ridge Middle School Students who made it on the Second Quarter Gold Star List. These students had no detentions, referrals, or bus citations. They also had to maintain good attendance, which means they had to attend school at least 90% of the time.
These students will be invited to a special Gold Star Dance on Friday, February 14th from 6:30 to 8:00. This dance is only for FRMS students who are on the Gold Star list. There is no admission to get in to the dance, but refreshments will be sold. Invitations will be sent to Gold Star students in the next week.
Again, congratulations to our Gold Star students. Students who did not make the Gold Star list second quarter, can make it on the list for third quarter with great behavior and great attendance. The reward activity for third quarter will be a special Magic Show assembly that will feature a professional magician sawing someone in half!
The Second Quarter Gold Star list is posted in the library hallway.
Just a reminder to parents that we have officially started our third quarter of school. When you check your child’s grades in Home Access, please make sure the RC box is switched from 2 to 3 for the third quarter. You won’t see their new assignments and new grades if you don’t change the 2 to a 3. Thank you. FRMS Staff
During our Home Room on 1/22 and 1/29, we will be presenting information to students about E-Cigarettes/Vaping Pens and the negative health impact they can have on middle school students. We will be sharing with students information put together recently by the Center for Disease Control or CDC. To help families join in the conversation, below is a link to an informational flyer for parents.
