8th Grade Shadow Days:
From May 23rd through May 31st 8th grade students will be going to the high school to shadow a 9th grade student. Each 8th grade student will spend one morning at EHS, travelling to different classes, getting to know teachers, and getting an opportunity to experience high school. We are excited to have the 8th graders visit the high school and feel that this will be a positive experience as they begin the transition from middle school to high school. They will be departing FRMS around 8:30 and returning to FRMS around 11:00 AM.
We will be transporting students to and from the middle school via district mini-buses. If for some reason you do not want your student to attend, please click on the link below, sign the reverse permission form, and return it to school. If you would like your student attending their shadow day you do not need to respond.
Students will be attending in groups according to their homeroom teacher:
Julie Coffman’s Homeroom: May 23
Martha Pryor’s Homeroom May 28
Marian French’s Homeroom May 29
Justin Peeler’s Homeroom May 30
Sarah Wartenbee’s Homeroom May 31st

As a service to our community, each of the FRSD schools will be serving as a nonofficial ballot drop off location. This means that you can bring your ballot to the school and we will make sure it gets turned in to Lane County Elections. Parents can drop off their ballot when they drop off their children or drop them by any school office any time during the school day. For the next two weeks, a FRMS staff member will be out in front of the school between 8:00 and 8:15 holding our ballot drop off box to make it even easier to drop off your ballot.
Our hope is that this will make voting more convenient and encourage more parents and community members to vote. Don’t forget that the special election for Lane County is May 21st.
This week we want to thank and celebrate our fantastic middle school teachers. They work extremely hard to provide every student an excellent learning environment. During the course of one single day, middle school teachers impact the lives of up to 200 students.. They teach, but they are also there to help, to guide, to connect, and to encourage students. FRMS teachers are dedicated to their craft, to their students, to our school, and to our community. Take the time this week to thank your middle school student’s teachers for the incredible work they do.

FRSD schools will remain open on Wednesday, May 8th.
Dear Fern Ridge families,
Many of you may have heard reports regarding some Lane County School Districts being closed on May 8th. In Fern Ridge, schools will remain open.
The Oregon Education Association has called upon its members to make May 8th a “Day of Action” to advocate for legislative action to significantly invest in K-12 education so that Oregon schools have adequate resources to serve all students. Union’s planned activities include many districts participating in one-day teacher strikes (“walkouts”). In Fern Ridge our teachers and union leadership have elected to participate in this Day of Action in a way that is least disruptive to families and student learning time.
Our teacher union leadership has been transparent and communicating with me the last few weeks regarding their planning, and I recently have been informed that teachers that participate will be “walking out” after students are released on Wednesday, May 8th. This type of action shows their support for the larger “Day of Action”, while being least disruptive to our students and families.
The missed hours of work/professional development time will be unpaid strike time for teachers, or they must take a ½ day of their personal leave. The Fern Ridge School District and I share our teacher’s goal of convincing the Oregon Legislature to make a significant investment in education to provide smaller class sizes, more learning time, increased health and safety services and a well-rounded education. However, the district does not endorse or condone walkouts that disrupt the work day.
I have been informed that during this walkout many of our licensed staff will be at the corner of Territorial Highway and 126 sharing positive signs regarding supporting students and increased K-12 funding to serve all students.
If additional information becomes available, or something changes, we will communicate immediately with our families
- Just a reminder that students who are absent Friday, April 19th cannot attend the dance that night- even if the absence is for just one period. The only exception would be those students with medical appointments who bring a doctor’s note confirming that appointment to the office when they return or to the dance that night. The dance is open to all FRMS students and admission is $4. Doors open at 6:30. Dance ends at 8:00.
- 8th Grade Promotion- 8th Grade students need to start bringing in their promotion photos to Ms. French for the powerpoint used during the ceremony. This should be a photo that shows the student doing something they enjoy and a photo that shows who they are. For example, if they love riding horses a photo of the student on horseback would be great. It could be a photo of them hiking, reading, playing sports, reading, relaxing with family, etc…..just something that gives us a glimpse into who your 8th grader is. The student needs to be in the foreground of the picture.
- FRMS Parent Group- Our next parent group meeting will be Monday, April 22nd at 6:30 PM in the FRMS Library. The main topic will be 8th grade promotion planning.
- Band and Choir Concert has been changed to Tuesday, May 14th at 7:00 PM in the FRMS gym. This will be a concert for all band and choir students. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the hard work and effort these students have put in.
- Class Elections: Students interested in serving as a 9th grade Class Officer at EHS next year or as FRMS Student Body President or Vice President, can pick up nomination forms in the office. Nominations close May 1st and elections will be in mid-May.
