FRMS will use a Hybrid Model to address student and staff safety concerns. Once we get the go ahead to return students to the building, students will be attending school two days a week (Tuesday /Thursday or Wednesday/Friday.) This will allow us to have practice safety measures like social distancing and face masks with smaller class sizes and fewer students in the building. Unfortunately, we can’t return students to the building until the state says that we can. So we will continue in Distance Learning until the metrics set by Governor Brown allow us to return students to the building. Click here for the most current updates from the district.
In the meantime, we wanted to give you some information about what FRMS Hybrid Distance Learning will look like.
- Distance Learning this fall will look nothing like it did in the Spring. Students will take five classes (LA, Math, Science, Social Studies, and P.E.). They will interact with teachers via Zoom every day- they will also have opportunities to interact and learn from each other. Distance learning via Zoom is going to be a lot like a regular classroom- during one class period there may be time that the teacher lectures, time for class discussions, time for partner or small group work, time for independent work, time to ask questions or get help, time to read or watch a video, time to get started homework, etc.
- Student schedules will look like a regular schedule with 45 minute periods and at least ten minutes between classes. They will have the same classes and teachers when they return to onsite learning to make the transition easier.
- There will be grades- not just the Pass/No Pass we had last spring.
- Teachers will be recording and posting their Zoom classes for students to access later if they miss a class or need to hear the instruction again.
- We have scheduled a 90 minute block in between third and fourth period. We want students to have a chance to relax, help their family with lunch, take a break, go outside, play, start their homework, etc. We are also planning some optional online activities via Zoom that they can participate in like a virtual assembly or a virtual recess so they hang out with their friends.
- Teacher Office Hours- Teachers will also be available to help individual students through Zoom before school and after school.
- FRSD is working to help students without the internet access distance learning. Stay tuned to hear more.
- Chromebooks will be available to check out for those students who took the online Tech Survey and indicated they have a need. The survey is still up through August 21st. Call the school if you missed the survey.
- Distance Learning Schedule- Fern Ridge Middle School
Tuesdays thru Fridays (No School Mondays) 8:25 – 9:15 1st Period
9:25 – 10:15 2nd Period
10:25 – 11:15 3rd Period
11:15 – 12:45 Lunch Break & Optional Virtual Assemblies or Activities
12:45 – 1:35 4th Period
1:45 – 2:35 5th Period
Thanks in advance to our families for filling out the survey below (very short, 2-3 minutes). The survey allows the district to collect some data, regarding the following:
- How many students will be enrolling in our hybrid program at our schools (some in person-some out as allowed by health metrics and ODE/Governor guidance).
- How currently plan to enroll in our FRSD OPTIONS program that will be fully online with some teacher support.
- How many are pursuing an option outside of the FRSD school district and will not be returning.
This information will help us tremendously with our planning over the next several weeks. This is for returning AND new students to fill out. Please take one survey for EACH student that you have. The survey will remain open until Monday morning, August 10th.
If you need more information before filling out the survey regarding what our hybrid/in-person model will look like, or more information on the FRSD OPTIONS program, please feel free to call or email your building principal.

Update: 7/27/20
We need your help. We still have over 125 students who have textbooks or library books checked out to them from the 19-20 school year. We really need to have those library books and textbooks returned or paid for. The value of the textbooks or library books still missing totals over $3,600. The list of missing items includes 72 textbooks. We don’t have the funds to replace that many library books and textbooks. Please help us by finding and returning any textbooks or library books your FRMS student may still have or paying for the cost of lost books.
To find out if your child has textbooks or library books still checked out to them, you can call Laurie Ruell at 541-935-2253 ext. 1207 or email me at ojohnson@fernridge.k12.or.us. Books can be returned to the district office or paid for at the district office.
Thank you in advance for your assistance and help in solving this problem.
Official notices will be mailed the first week of August. All fines and fees must be paid for before students can participate in extracurricular activities in high school.
As we close the office for the summer, and finish what has not been the year we hoped for in September, we want to take a moment to thank our parents, our students, and our staff. To our parents, thank you for your commitment to education, for your flexibility, and for your perseverance. The 19-20 School Year turned out to be a wild ride, and all of you not only rode in the car with us, you had to take the wheel and drive. So thank you.
To the FRMS Staff who proved over and over again their dedication to their students and to our school community, thank you.
And finally to the FRMS students, as much as we’ve missed you the last three months, we are tremendously proud of you. Some day, decades from now, you will tell your children and grandchildren about what it was like to be a student during this crisis. Remember to tell them how hard you worked, how quickly you adjusted to huge changes, and how you never stopped learning even when school buildings closed.
Our school will be closed from June 22nd to August 17th. During this time, we will be enjoying our summer but we will also be planning and working towards reopening in a way that meets the guidance from ODE. As plans are finalized and decisions made, we will be posting updates on our website, so please make sure you subscribe to our website for those updates.
Enjoy your summer

FRMS Office is open from 8 AM to 2:30 PM through Friday, June 19th for families to pick up 8th Grade Promotion Certificates or 6th/7th Grade Awards. You can also drop off any library books, textbooks, or Chromebooks before 2:30 on the 19th.
After June 19th please check our website for updates and information regarding the 20-21 school year.
After June 19th, certificates and awards can be picked up at the FRSD office across the street from FRMS.
We’ve had a lot of questions over the last few weeks about the best way to stay in touch and make sure you know what is happening at FRMS. This is especially important as we move forward with planning for what school will look like in the fall. Come August, we will be posting on our website updates and information about September.
The best way to stay in the know, is to subscribe to the Fern Ridge Middle School website. On the right side of this page is a box that says “Subscribe”. Enter your email and you will get automatic email updates every time something new is posted on the website.
The second way to get up to date information is to sign up for our text messaging system- Remind. There is a different list for each grade level. If you are a current 6th or 7th grade parent and receive our text messages, you will continue to receive them next year. If you don’t currently receive our text messages, all you need to do is click on the link to the right to sign up. Sign up for the grade level your child will be in 2020-21.
In addition to our website, you will want to check the main Fern Ridge School District website for updates as well.
Thank you to both our 8th grade students who came through our Drive Thru Promotion and to our wonderful FRMS staff members who celebrated each and everyone of them!
Parents of 8th graders who did not make it to the celebration can stop by the FRMS office to pick up promotion certificates. Our office is open from 8 AM to 2:30 PM thru June 19th.
FRMS is proud to present our 2020 Slide Show honoring and celebrating our 8th grade students:
Click here for the link to the slideshow
FRMS will also host our 8th Grade Drive Thru Promotion celebration Thursday, June 11th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Families will drive along the bus lane where staff will greet students. At the end of the bus lane, students will be given their promotion certificates and any awards they may have received. For student and staff safety, staff handing out the certificates will be gloved and masked. We ask families to stay in their car and to please only have one car per an 8th grader.
To prevent back up on Territorial, please adhere to the following schedule:
5:00 to 5:30 Last names beginning with A to C
5:30 to 6:00 Last names beginning with D to H
6:00 to 6:30 Last names beginning with J to R
6:30 to 7:00 Last names beginning with S to Z
Congratulations to all of our 8th grade students! We are proud of each of you and know that you will be amazing in high school!
Congratulations to all of our 8th Grade Award Winning Students! We are so proud of each and everyone of you. We will have your awards along with your promotion certificate when you come through your Drive Thru Promotion Celebration.
If you can’t come to your celebration, pick up your awards and promotion certificate at the FRMS office before June 19th.
