This past Saturday, April 7th, the EHS OBOB team traveled to Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon for the High School section of the state OBOB Tournament.  The tournament began with “pool play” among the 15 schools that would be competing for the state title.

Elmira started out by by beating Alliance Charter School (from Oregon City) by a score of 45-25.  Next up was Adrian, located south of Ontario, and EHS won by a score of 33-8.  The third pool play battle was against Triad School (a private K-12 school in Klamath Falls) and again EHS won, this time by a score of 45-25. The final battle was against Imbler (a school near LaGrande) and EHS again prevailed by a score of 50-20.  Coming out of pool play EHS was seeded number one with a total of 168 points scored.

The next section of the tournament was an 8 team seeded bracket.  EHS matched up against the 8 seed, Imbler, and won by a score of 45-10.  In the final 4 / semi-final round, EHS faced Estacada.  The Final score was EHS 50, Estacada 20 and EHS was onto the Championship match that contains twice as many questions as the prior rounds.

In the Championship match, EHS faced Lebanon. While the match went back and forth, with both teams having the lead at some point, EHS went on a late run to win by a score of 68-52.  This is the first OBOB championship trophy for EHS, a testament to years of work and practice put in by the members of our team and their coaches.  A big congratulations to their coach and advisor, Sherry Cooper, as well as the team members:  Josiah Lorenz, Emily Eagle Eye, Jessica Woods and Kelly Hoffman!  Go Falcons!

PLEASE SAVE THE DATE! Connected Lane County is organizing a countywide Career Exploration event, which is scheduled to take place October 12th 2017 at Lane County Fairgrounds. This event is open to 8th and 9th graders, and takes place from 9am-11:30am.

This is an opportunity for students to learn more about employment with local companies in industries such as technology, manufacturing, financial, and healthcare. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about post-secondary pathways to their chosen career, participate in a mock interview, and hear from local skills panel!

Please note, Thursday, October 12th 2017 is a no school day for the Fern Ridge School District, however, a school bus will be transporting students to and from the event. A Parent/Guardian will be responsible for dropping off and picking up their child from EHS before and after the event. Students will need to be dropped off at the front of EHS at 8:20am and picked-up at the front of EHS at Noon.

If your child would like to participate in this amazing opportunity please turn in the completed permission form to your child’s school counselor by Friday, October 6th. You may pick up permission forms in the Counseling Center at EHS or from Mr. Chambers at FRMS. If you have any questions or would like more information please contact Ms. Brittany at EHS, 541-935-8200, or Mr. Chambers at FRMS, at 541-935-8230.

The PSAT is on October 15th at 8:00 am in the cafeteria, doors open at 7:30 am. The cost for the PSAT is free for Sophomores and $10 for Juniors. All students interested in taking the PSAT must sign up with the bookkeeper. If you have any questions, see Ms. Brittany in the Counseling Center.

This is a reminder that every Tuesday and Thursday, EHS teachers volunteer to staff a “Homework Club” in the library from 3:30-4:30. Lately, not many students have been taking advantage of this time to get additional teacher support or simply study on their own. Computers are available for use as well. Unfortunately, there is no bus available for homework club. If you think Homework Club is something that would be valuable for your student, please encourage them to attend. If our attendance continues to be poor, this great opportunity for our students may be something our staff looks at needing to change in the future.  Go Falcons!

Changes for the Elmira High School PSAT/NMSQT for 2015

The PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, a practice SAT exam that gives students a great opportunity to measure their skills in correlation to the SAT college entrance exam, propel them towards greater college and career readiness, and serves as an entry point to millions in scholarship dollars.

In past years, Elmira High School has hosted the PSAT on a Saturday test date. This year, with the updates Collegeboard is implementing with the SAT in the spring of 2016, the PSAT is only being offered on a school day, Wednesday, October 14th starting at 8:20 a.m. Students will be released from testing around 12:00 p.m. and are expected to return to their regular class schedule for the day.

With this opportunity, EHS is requiring that all sophomores participate in PSAT testing at no cost. We continue to encourage our juniors to sign-up at a test fee of $10 per student. Sophomores and parents of sophomore students do not need to sign up for the test. They will automatically be added to our test role sheet. Juniors still interested in signing up, please see Mrs. Boytz, EHS Bookkeeper for payment and registration. ALL sophomores on an IEP have the opportunity to opt. out of testing. In this case, please speak to your student’s case manager.

PSAT/NMSQT Student Study Guides will start being distributed throughout the next week. This guide will serve to help you and your students understand more about the benefits of the PSAT, some sample questions for what to expect on the exam, and a list of information to help prepare students for test day.

Should you have any questions before then, please reach Meagan Haas, School Counselor at (541)935-8200. You may also reach Meagan by email at mhaas@fernridge.k12.or.us .
