Olivia Johnson

Olivia Johnson has been the principal at Veneta Elementary for seven years. Prior to that, she served as the special education director for the Fern Ridge School District. She has been an educator and an administrator at the elementary and middle school levels for over twenty years.

Students can now access their schedules in Home Access. Every student will have five classes: P..E., Social Studies, Science, Math, and Language Arts. Students will attend five Zoom classes each day. The “bell” schedule is posted under Distance Learning Schedule on the right hand side of this website.

Look for information on how to access their classes to come in the next few days. Students will access Google classrooms where there will be links to Zoom meetings posted.

Students cannot request schedule changes due to COVID 19 class size and cohorting restrictions.

If they cannot access their schedule in Home Access, we will have hard copies of their schedules available in the office to pick up this week.

When Distance Learning starts, students will be using Google Classroom and Zoom to access their classrooms. To help students and families who want to become familiar with these two platforms before the start of Distance Learning on September 15th, we’ve put together some links to training videos and other resources.

Teachers will also review these platforms with students when Distance Learning starts. However we know there are students out there that are anxious and nervous so we hope that these links might help them become more comfortable in those two platforms ahead of time.

It’s hard to believe that the first day of school is just two weeks away. We wanted to share with you some information about what the upcoming school  year will look like for FRMS. The information in this post is only for the FRMS Hybrid program.  The FRMS Hybrid program is where we will be distance learning for a while and then back in the building once the state allows us to be.

(For information on the FRSD Options program look here:  FRSD Options Information )

FRMS Hybrid Model Information

  1. Distance Learning– Under state guidelines, we will start the school year in distance learning mode. As the year progresses, we will be checking the state metrics every four to five weeks to determine if we can return students to the building. The first checkpoint will be October 5th. We will be checking every four to five weeks.
  2. Student Schedules-While we are in Distance Learning students will take five classes: Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, Science, and P.E. in a five period day. Final schedules will be in Home Access on September 8th. We had hoped to have them earlier, but we need to make adjustments this week following registration last week. We will also have hard copies of schedules available to pick up.
  3. Bell Schedule– We will be posting a final “bell” schedule on the 8th as well. Students will go through a five period day. First period will be at 8:25, second period at 9:20, and so on. Teachers will meet live via Zoom and Google classroom with their students each period. Students will engage with teachers and with peers much like they would in a onsite classroom.
  4. Extended Lunch– We have set aside 90 minutes for lunch and an extended break for students. Our goal in doing so is to allow time for students to take eat, take a break, go for a walk, etc. We know that some of our students help with lunch for their siblings and some families will be coming to pick up lunches from the school district. We also wanted time for some fun activities like assemblies, social events, etc. We are planning virtual recesses so students can connect, virtual assemblies, and even virtual field trips during this time. All of these events are optional and students are welcome to join or not.
  5. Chromebooks- Chromebooks will be available to check out September 9th at the high school. More information on that to come. You needed to fill out the tech survey online or during registration indicating that you needed a chromebook.
  6. No internet? We are working on plans for how to serve students without internet access. Please make sure you fill out that Tech Survey to let us know that you don’t have internet access.
  7. Google Classroom and Zoom Access- this week teachers are setting up their Google Classrooms. Once that is done, we will be sharing out how your child can access their classrooms. Look for that information to come next week as well.
  8.  Teacher Office Hours- Teachers will be available before school and afterschool by phone or by email or by Zoom if students or families have questions or need help.
  9. Parent Q and A- We are planning a FRMS Parent Q and A this Wednesday at 4:30 We will post how to access it later today or tomorrow.

We are excited to announce that 2020-2021 FRMS Planners just arrived this morning. Our planners have 30 pages of reference materials for students including math formulas, periodic table, commonly misspelled words, weights and measurements conversion chart, test taking skills, parts of speech, and more.

Whether it is online or when we are back in the building teachers will use planners to help teach organizational skills and time management. Students will be expected to use a planner to help them track their assignments.

Planners are $5 each and can be picked up at the FRMS office any day between 8 AM and 3 PM.

Students are also welcome to provide their own planners. Please make sure they are weekly planners.

Just a reminder to all FRMS families that the final day of our Returning Student Registration will be Thursday the 27th from 8:00 AM to 3;00 PM. You are welcome to register online or drop by in person. For information on how to register online click on the link on the right hand  side of this web page that says Online Registration.

You do not need an appointment to register in person. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing. We are limiting the number of people in the office to help with social distancing so you may be asked to wait if you come and we happen to be busy.

Whether your student will be back at FRMS under the Hybrid Model or they will be attending the FRSD Options program, they have to be register for school. The process is the same for both models- the only difference is you will click a box online or check a line for the in person that lets us know which model you chose.
