Applegate Regional Theater will be holding auditions for “Sara Crew: A Little Princess” on Thursday, January 24th at 7 PM and Saturday, January 26th at 11 AM. They are looking for actors ranging from age 7 to adult. Students interested in auditioning just have to show up- no singing roles and no prepared audition necessary.
If your middle school student is interested in acting, this is a great opportunity for them to participate in community theater.

There will be no school on Monday, January 21st due to the Martin Luther King Jr holiday. There will also be no school on Friday, January 25th. It is a Teacher Work Day. The end of second quarter will be January 24th and the beginning of third quarter/second semester will be Monday, January 28th.
A reminder to FRMS families that our Lost and Found will be donated to a local charity at the end of the day on January 25th.
In July of 2015, the Oregon Legislature passed SB 856 (Sex Abuse Prevention Instruction) which requires that schools provide child sexual abuse prevention instruction kindergarten through 12th grade. The law requires that the instruction be age appropriate, medically accurate, and culturally responsive.
At FRMS, we’ve adopted the Safer, Smarter Teens: Personal Power Middle School Curriculum from Lauren’s Kids. Students will receive the bulk of their sexual abuse prevention instruction the week of January 21st through January 24th with lessons on Self-Esteem and Personal Power; Fitting In and Acceptance; and A.C.T.- Abuse, Disclosure, and Getting Help during their Social Studies classes. In addition, we are planning additional lessons on Social Media Safety and Reporting Sexual Abuse in February.

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) produces yearly report cards for schools and districts. These reports were mandated by the 1999 state legislature and provide educators with an opportunity to communicate directly with parents and community members about how local schools are performing. The state “revamps” the way these report cards look every few years, and that is the case again this year. The new report cards create an “At A Glance School Profile” that provides a wide range of information.
School districts are required to inform families of these report cards and where they can be found. When students return from winter break, each school in Fern Ridge will have a copy available in the front office for parents that are interested. In addition, we have placed a link to a PDF version of each of the report cards for Fern Ridge Middle School below for quick access.
There is also a direct link to the ODE website where the reports can be viewed on the main page of the Fern Ridge School District website. That link can be found under the “parents” tab on the main page of the FRSD website.

Fern Ridge Middle School will not be in session from December 22 – January 7 for Winter Break. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 8th. Have a safe and happy Holiday Season!
For those interested in attending the Elmira High School Basketball Tournament being held at FRMS and EHS Friday, December 21st and Saturday, December 22nd a link to a schedule is provided below. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for students, and $3 for seniors.
As we start to look ahead to Spring, we are beginning to plan for state testing at Fern Ridge Middle School. Over the last few years, students in Fern Ridge and throughout the state have had the opportunity to take the Smarter Balanced assessment in math and language arts. Unlike tests that parents might remember where we just filled in the bubble, the SBAC tests ask students to apply real world critical thinking, writing, reasoning, communication, and problem solving skills. At the middle school level, the test is designed to measure how “on track” your child is to graduate from high school. At the high school level, passing these tests is a requirement for an Oregon diploma. Continue reading
Elmira High School will be holding a basketball tournament on Friday, December 21st and Saturday, December 22nd. The first game will start at 2:30 and will be held in the Fern Ridge Middle School gym. Those planning on attending the game should walk around the side of the building directly to the gym entrance. Until school is out at 3:15, we are asking spectators and participants to please stay in the gym.
Because of the expected participants and spectators attending the game, the parking lot will be busier than normal during dismissal. Parents may want to have their student take the bus home that day or use the district office parking lot across the street or the Elmira Open Bible parking lot. While the game will start at 2:30, we expect the two teams to arrive around 1:45 for practice before the game.
If you would like to attend, admission is $5 for adults, $4 for students, and $3 for seniors.
There has been a diagnosed and treated case of scabies among our students at FRMS. Scabies is an itchy condition caused by tiny mites that burrow under the skin and found mostly between fingers and toes. The itching is usually worse at night. It is possible that your child may have been in contact with scabies. If you suspect that your child may have scabies, it is important to contact your child’s doctor or primary care provider. He or she can make the diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Scabies will not go away on its own.
Over the next month or so, FRSD is collecting data from a wide variety of groups. This is for the “Continuing Improvement Plan” required every three years by Oregon Department of Education. Input from multiple sources and stakeholders is required by the state for the final plan. Emails are going out to Teachers, Instructional Assistants, Administrators, etc…
For the two groups mentioned in the title above, Community Partners, (e.g. Businesses/Elected Officials/Non-Profits, Early Childhood Education/After School Programs, TSP) and Parents, we have links to the surveys here in this post. The “indicators” on your particular survey were chosen from 18 different indicators the state wants Fern Ridge School District to address in our improvement plan and are verbatim from the master list.
