Veneta Elementary’s Annual Reading Contest and Celebration kicks off on Friday, March 6th with an appearance by the Eugene Emerald’s mascot Sluggo in a schoolwide assembly at 1:30 PM.
Our Reading Celebration runs from March 6th through March 18th. There will be lots of activities focused on reading going on at the school including a reading recess each day, making bookmarks at lunch, sharing favorite books from staff members, guest readers, and a school wide read in.
The highlight of our Reading Celebration is our Reading Contest. Each student is asked to read each day and track their reading on the tally sheet that will come home on Friday. Each grade level has set a goal for the number of minutes each student should read. Every student who meets that goal will receive a two tickets to a Eugene Emerald’s baseball game. The student in each classroom who reads the most minutes will receive a gift certificate to the Spring Book Fair in April. Students can read books or newspapers or magazines. They can also have parents or siblings read to them. Or they can read to a sibling or parent. Every student who returns their Tally sheet will receive an “I Love Reading” pencil. Tally sheets are due March 19th.
The center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect will be holding an open and free forum for anyone interested in the topic of Child Abuse Prevention as part of the 90 by 30 campaign. If it takes a village to raise a child, then it takes an incredible hard working and supportive school staff working together to educate one. The teachers and myself would be lost without the amazing and incredible classified staff we are lucky to work with here at Veneta Elementary School. From our educational assistants to our custodians to our kitchen helpers to our secretaries- the classified staff at VES rocks. We are lucky to have each and every one of them. Please join our school this week in saying thank you to our classified staff for all that they do each and every day to support our students. Thank you to Ronda, Lorie, Cherri, Kristi, Shannon, Jessica, Sam, Missy, Cara, Misti, Delise, Jaime, Cortnie, Kelly, Janet, Gracie, Mona, Pete, and Pete. Thank you for making our school a wonderful place to grow and learn.
Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, Fern Ridge School District will be offering a full day kindergarten program at both Veneta Elementary and Elmira Elementary. Kindergarten PreRegistration will be May 2nd.
Parents of incoming kindergarten students who want to visit our school are welcome to come on Tuesday, March 10th at 6:00 PM for a tour of our school and then stay for our PALS (Parents Action League For Students) meeting if they like. We will also be offering school tours on March 12th at 8:30 AM and March 19th at 8:30 AM. On both schools parents and children can see our library, gym, playground, and peek into classrooms. In addition to incoming kindergarten students, we welcome other students interested in attending Veneta Elementary School under open enrollment.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1:15 will be the Veneta Elementary School OBOB Finals!!! Two teams will be answering questions about 16 different books that they have read over the last few months. The teams are the Book Crew and the Book Givers. The winning team will go on to represent Veneta Elementary at the regional competition in March. In our book, both of these teams are winners for all of the work and effort they have put into OBOB this year. Plus they have each successfully battled their way through the semi-finals and pool play to make it to the finals. Congrats and good luck to both teams!
