This week (May 8th thru May 12th) is Teacher Appreciation Week and we want to take a moment to recognize and thank the hard working and absolutely amazing teachers of Veneta Elementary School. Teachers do so much more than simply teach- they guide, they care, they motivate, they inspire, they serve, and they give. For 36 weeks every school year teachers give their time, their energy, their hearts, and themselves so that our children can learn and grow and thrive. This week is our opportunity to give something back to them. To let them know that the work they do is so greatly appreciated. So join me in taking the time this week to thank your child’s teacher for all that they do every single day.

Just a few reminders as we approach the end of a great school year:

As the weather heats up, please remember that our school has a dress code. No spaghetti straps, shorts/skirts must be past your child’s finger tips, and flip-flops are not allowed at school due to safety reasons. A complete list of our dress code can be found in our family handbook.

Please do not drop off your child before 7:30 or allow them to arrive by bike before 7:30. We have had students arriving these last few weeks as early as 7:00. There is no supervision before 7:30 and students are not allowed in the building before 7:30. Continue reading

Just a few reminders about our 2017-18 Kindergarten Registration Process:

1. Our online registration is now open. If you have a student who will be 5 by September 1st and you want them to attend kindergarten at Veneta Elementary in the fall, click on the link on the right hand side of the page for information on how to register them online. If you cannot register them online, you can come in person to the school and register them any day between now and June 23.

2. Once you have registered your child online, you must come in person to the school to complete the process. At the school we will need to see your proof of residence, a copy of your child’s birth certificate that we can keep on file, and immunization information. Your child is not considered registered for kindergarten until you have completed the process in person.

3. Plan on coming back on August 16th to finalize transportation plans and set your child’s Kindergarten Orientation date.

This year we are not having a Kindergarten PreRegistration or Kindergarten Round Up Day. Instead, families are encouraged to register anytime online. If you have any questions or concerns about Kindergarten Registration for 2017-2018, please contact our school office at 541-935-8225.

Beginning in 2017-2018, Veneta Elementary School will be implementing a new homework policy. Our new policy replaces homework in  K-3 with reading and with reading and a short homework assignment in the 4th and 5th grade.. Research tells us that students become better readers by reading and that reading improves their academic skills across the board. Students who read every day are better writers, spellers, problem-solvers, and thinkers than students who spend that same 30 minutes doing drill and practice worksheets. We’ve also heard loud and clearly from families that homework can be a source of stress and frustration for families. We want families to have time for each other. Below are links to two very important documents for you to review. The first is a letter explaining the goals of our new policy and how it came to be. The second is a copy of the new policy itself.

If you have any questions or concerns or feedback, you can call or email Ms. Johnson at 541-935-8225 or by email at ojohnson@fernridge.k12.or.us

April 26th is Administrative Professionals or Secretaries Day and we want to take a moment to thank our fabulous school secretaries- Ronda Henneman and Lorie Haffner. Ronda and Lorie keep our school, our students, and  our staff, running smoothly. Together they are the heart of our school and we thank them for their hard work.
