The Elmira High School Annual College and Futures Fair is coming up next week! It will be taking place on Wednesday, November 4th from 6-8pm in the EHS Cafeteria. There will be a financial aid seminar with important updates to share about the financial aid process and FAFSA application. The EHS college fair is open to all juniors, seniors, and parents, and attending serves as a great opportunity to check off this senior year requirement! OREGON PROMISE GIVES THE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2016 THE OPPORTUNITY FOR
FULL OR PARTIAL TUITION GRANTS TO ATTEND COMMUNITY COLLEGE
The state is launching its Oregon Promise program–offering graduating
high school seniors an opportunity to have some or all of their
community college tuition covered.
This program is available to high school students graduating in Spring
2016. Students must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA, have resided
in Oregon for at least 12 months prior to community college
enrollment, and enroll at least half time in community college in Fall
2016.
To apply, students must complete the Oregon Promise application,
submit their high school transcript, and complete the FAFSA or its
approved alternate. Students must accept all state and federal grants
they are awarded to qualify for the Oregon Promise.
Students must apply for the Oregon Promise program between November 1,

Last year around this time, a group of community members/parents brought up the topic of Drug Testing student athletes (something several other schools in the Sky-Em league currently do). After much research, discussion and investigation, the policy was approved at the School Board meeting last night. Beginning with Winter Sports this year, this policy will be in effect. All participants of “competitive extracurricular activities” will be tested at the beginning of the season, in addition, 20% of each team will be tested at least once during the season.
Seniors – It is time to order your cap, gown and graduation announcements. Miners graduate services will be on campus this Thursday and Friday 10/15 & 10/16 during lunch in the cafeteria to take orders. Don’t forget to bring your order forms and deposit money. Miners will also be taking orders for Class rings and Letterman jackets. Ordering information is available in the front office.
In early September, the week before students came back, all staff at EHS participated in a 1/2 day safety training given by local law enforcement. The training introduced a “protocol” that is becoming the standard for all Lane County Schools. Having this “common” training allows students that change Districts, or simply move up from Elementary to Middle to High School to have been trained the same way all the time, K-12. In addition, it ensures that substitute teachers that are in buildings need to know only one process/procedure, rather than a different one for each building. Today during homeroom time, all EHS students were introduced to this training/protocol. The acronym for this protocol is called A.L.I.C.E., which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evade. (You could search the acronym on the internet for more information). On Monday, the last 5 minutes of each class period, students will be discussing how this acronym relates to each classroom. For example, what are the quickest routes to leave campus from different classrooms, what items in the room could be used to counter an aggressor, and what items can be used to barricade a door. Please feel free to discuss the information/training your student received today with them. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the school.
Changes for the Elmira High School PSAT/NMSQT for 2015
The PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, a practice SAT exam that gives students a great opportunity to measure their skills in correlation to the SAT college entrance exam, propel them towards greater college and career readiness, and serves as an entry point to millions in scholarship dollars.
In past years, Elmira High School has hosted the PSAT on a Saturday test date. This year, with the updates Collegeboard is implementing with the SAT in the spring of 2016, the PSAT is only being offered on a school day, Wednesday, October 14th starting at 8:20 a.m. Students will be released from testing around 12:00 p.m. and are expected to return to their regular class schedule for the day.
With this opportunity, EHS is requiring that all sophomores participate in PSAT testing at no cost. We continue to encourage our juniors to sign-up at a test fee of $10 per student. Sophomores and parents of sophomore students do not need to sign up for the test. They will automatically be added to our test role sheet. Juniors still interested in signing up, please see Mrs. Boytz, EHS Bookkeeper for payment and registration. ALL sophomores on an IEP have the opportunity to opt. out of testing. In this case, please speak to your student’s case manager.
PSAT/NMSQT Student Study Guides will start being distributed throughout the next week. This guide will serve to help you and your students understand more about the benefits of the PSAT, some sample questions for what to expect on the exam, and a list of information to help prepare students for test day.

Attention Seniors, Senior Parents, and Photographers:
2016 Senior pictures are due no later than January 15th to the yearbook staff. There will be a box in the front office if you choose to turn in a hard copy of your senior picture. Please make sure your name is on the back of the photo. You also can email the portraits to Ms. Schilling at sschilling@fernridge.k12.or.us. Open House will be tomorrow night, September 17th, from 5:15-6:15. This is a very low-key event, so please come down and meet the teachers or tour the campus and have your student show you around. Below is a brief summary of the schedule.
5:15-Cafeteria Opens. Teachers will be at tables, by Department: Science, Math, Electives, etc…. Feel free to visit with any teacher you would like, including the office and or counseling staff.
5:30-Brief welcome from Mr. Carpenter
5:35-6:15–The campus will be open and teachers will be in there classrooms, stop by and visit them and see the rooms.
This event is the first “contest” for the homecoming week activities/competition (homecoming week is next week!). The class that has the largest % of parents attend Open House, will be leading the competition! Ice cream sandwiches will be passed out to all! In addition, if you attend, you will receive a free ticket that will allow you entry into the Girls Volleyball game that takes place at 6:30 in the EHS Gym right after Open House concludes. Hope to see many of you there.
There has been an accident that is holding up the school buses from reaching the High School (Today, Wednesday 9/9) As a result, the students are still on campus. Expected delay is at least 30 minutes. Please follow Principal Carpenter facebook page for updates.
