websiteCurrently EHS has 9 teachers that keep up a lesson plan or blog website.  You can access those pages under the link on the right hand side of this page titled:  Staff Blogs & or Lesson Plans.  In the weeks to come, additional teachers will be adding sites.  These pages are a great place to get information regarding what is occurring in classes.

footballThe first home football game of the 14-15 school year is tomorrow night, September 5th at 7:00 PM.  A couple reminders and updates regarding our home football games and home athletic events in general.

1.  At each end of the grandstands, and in several areas around the field, there are are trash cans.  Please be courteous to our custodial staff who stay late to clean the stadium by disposing of your trash.

2. Young students (Middle School and younger) who visit the games should remain with their parents, or in the designated “youth” area at the East end of the home stadium.  This helps maintain an enjoyable experience for all the fans that attend games.  While it is ok for our youngest fans to not be in one of these areas, inappropriate behavior can and will result in this being required, or being asked to leave the game.  The assistance of parents in assuring the venue is safe and enjoyable for all is greatly appreciated.

3.  For home games for all sports this year there will only be one “gate” or entrance.  It will be the one on the South side of the field by the main parking lot. .  The benefits of this will be that fans will be able to flow to the restroom area without going through the gate that was usually on the North side of the field and it allows us to have more supervision staff and less “gate workers.”  The downside is that if you are used to parking in the back or north parking lot, you will need to walk through campus to the main gate on the south side of the field.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the school.  Go falcons

open.houseWe would like to welcome all EHS parents to an Open House this Thursday night from 6-8 PM here at the High School.  Your child/student is certainly welcome to attend as well.  Please park in the front (south side) and follow the signs.  We look forward to seeing you and having a great start to the 14-15 school year.

early.relaseIn 2014-15 EHS will be on an Early Release Wednesday schedule.  Each Wednesday students will be released at 1:18, much like the Middle School schedule at FRMS.  There will be a study hall available in a computer lab for athletes that want to stay on campus until practice begins and do school work.  The study hall will go from 1:30-3:20. This early release schedule will allow staff some critical staff development time throughout the year.  We are excited about the way this opportunity will help staff, students and parents alike in regards to improving instruction, allowing for a wide range of staff development activities and improving outcomes and experiences for students.

textingWe have added a new emergency/announcement texting feature here at EHS.  If you would like to receive periodic texts from EHS regarding information we would like to get out immediately, please do the following:  Text @Elmira to 228-284-2221 and then follow the directions by responding with your name once you get a verification text.  The primary ways EHS will use to communicate with families will remain the website, phone-dialer and facebook.  However, this new feature will allow us to get out some important information, and communicate with a large group of people quickly in an emergency situation such as a school closure.

site councilThe EHS Site Council has two open parent positions for 14-15. Thank you very much to Mr. Mike Montgomery and Mrs. Stacy Cornelius who volunteered to “run” for these two open spots. If there are any other parents who would like to be considered, please email me at gcarpenter@fernridge.k12.or.us. If we have more than two candidates, voting will take place during school registration.  Deadline will be Monday, August 18th.

report.card.Report cards were dropped off at the post office Tuesday evening, so families should be getting them soon.  This report card looks different than in the past.  Early in the year the school began work on implementing the requirements of HB 2220.  This bill set new report card requirements of which one was sending home an annual report that included information around a students proficiency in specific standards within a subject.  That information is included in this report card.  However, as often happens, the 2014 Legislature passed a new bill, HB 4150.  This bill kept some elements of the earlier bill, but eliminated this annual report requirement.  The bottom line is this report card looks different as we complied with the earlier HB 2220 requirements, however in 14-15, this may change again as a result of the new law.

On the report card you will receive, the most important elements to note are the “O” (overall grade).  This grade is the transcripted grade and the grade that determines GPA.  The “A” or academic grade, provides information around how that student achieved when just looking at tests and quizzes.  This academic grade/information has been on progress reports and report cards all year.  The new piece on this “annual report” report card are the proficiencies in specific subjects.  For example, in Geometry the standards might be Functions, Modeling, Statistics, Algebra, etc…. a students will receive a M-meets or a NM-not meets under these specific areas assessed throughout the Geometry course.  I realize this new report may be confusing, if you have questions do not hesitate to contact the school in August.  However, the grades under the “O” (overall column) is what should be the focus.  The rest of it is simply additional information.
