Real-World Learning in High School Health
This year, students are participating in a hands-on Baby Project using Baby Alive dolls that are similar in size and weight to real newborns. The goal is to give students a realistic understanding of infant care and the responsibilities that come with parenting.
Students work in pairs as co-parents over two weeks. The first week focuses on a Child Development mini-unit, while the second week is dedicated to project work, reflection, and student presentations. This structure gives students time to collaborate, problem-solve, and reflect on how their choices impact both themselves and others.
The Baby Project aligns with Oregon High School Health Education Standards by promoting communication, responsibility, and healthy decision-making. Most importantly, it helps students connect classroom learning to real-world skills related to relationships, family planning, and life beyond high school.
