Elmira High School 9th Grade Physics Takes Learning to New Heights!

Posted Date: 02/23/26 (04:22 PM)

The Elmira High School 9th grade physics classes are completing their unit on energy and engineering this week with a model bungee jump from the roof of the upper main gym.  Students have been employed by the Fern Ridge Amusement Park LLC (fictional) to design and build a safe and thrilling bungee jump ride for their customers (mostly plushies) at the amusement park.  The students have determined the stretchiness of several materials in the laboratory (see picture) and selected the one they believe will meet the customers needs for safety and thrill.  All important measurements for the jump are input into a spreadsheet application that the students use to determine the appropriate bungee length prior to the jump.  This project is a special opportunity for the students in that it is project based learning on a significant physical scale that requires conceptual application and computational modeling with some creative opportunity for jumper design.
