The highlight of our Reading Celebration is our Reading Contest. Each student is asked to read each day and track their reading on the tally sheet that will come home on Friday. Each grade level has set a goal for the number of minutes each student should read. Every student who meets that goal will receive a two tickets to a Eugene Emerald’s baseball game. The student in each classroom who reads the most minutes will receive a gift certificate to the Spring Book Fair in April. Students can read books or newspapers or magazines. They can also have parents or siblings read to them. Or they can read to a sibling or parent. Every student who returns their Tally sheet will receive an “I Love Reading” pencil. Tally sheets are due March 19th.

The center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect will be holding an open and free forum for anyone interested in the topic of Child Abuse Prevention as part of the 90 by 30 campaign. The goal of the 90 by 30 campaign is to reduce child abuse in Lane County by 90% by the year 2030. The forum will focus on what we can do in the Fern Ridge area to stop child abuse before it starts. The forum will be Wednesday, March 4th from 6:00 to 7:30 at the Elmira High School Theater. Please join us for this important conversation.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1:15 will be the Veneta Elementary School OBOB Finals!!! Two teams will be answering questions about 16 different books that they have read over the last few months. The teams are the Book Crew and the Book Givers. The winning team will go on to represent Veneta Elementary at the regional competition in March. In our book, both of these teams are winners for all of the work and effort they have put into OBOB this year. Plus they have each successfully battled their way through the semi-finals and pool play to make it to the finals. Congrats and good luck to both teams!

Our Valentine Family Dance was a resounding success. We had over 225 students attend plus over a hundred adults. Jeff Richey from Your Way Sound and Lights did a fantastic job as our DJ and kept the kids dancing all night long. We really appreciate Jeff donating his time to make our first elementary dance such a hit. We also want to thank all of our PALS members for their hard work planning and helping out at the dance. From decorating to taking pictures to handing out cupcakes to working the door- we could not have done it without our PALS parents. Thank you to Jennifer Gulseth, Kim Houweling, Hilary Ramsey, Shirley Janeczko, Sheila Cedarleaf, Jessica Bellisle, Aurelie Noble, Jessica Donaldson, Sam Yliz, and Jeff Cedarleaf. Thank you also to our staff members Peggy Ehlers and Mirka Chen for their help.

Our next PALS project will be our spring fundraiser. If you would like to help with that event and with planning other great events like Friday’s dance, please come to our next PALS meeting March 10th at 6:30.  Childcare will be provided and refreshments served.

Valentine 2This Friday, February 13th is our first ever Valentine Family Dance. All students are invited. The cost is $1 per a student, $2 per an adult, or $5 for a family. All children must be accompanied by an adult and the adult must stay for the event. This is not a drop off and pick up dance.

We will have a DJ with a sound and light system playing kid friendly music. There will also be a photo booth. Refreshments will be available.

Please help us have a successful event by reminding your child that the dance floor is not a playground. There should be no running around or sliding/crawling on the floor or yelling or otherwise being unsafe.

The dance will be from 6:30 to 8:30.
