Congratulations to our own Kasey Cutsforth (Sconce) on being inducted into Northwest Christian University’s Sports Hall of Fame. Kasey played soccer, basketball, and softball at Elmira High School prior to attending NCU. At NCU she participated in basketball and softball. Upon her graduation in 2007, she was hired to be an elementary teacher in Fern Ridge School District. Kasey currently teaches 1st grade at Veneta Elementary School.

Great job by the Veneta Elementary School staff and students today at their Talent Show!!! The show was enjoyed by all and what awesome talent we have here in Fern Ridge School District.
On Saturday, March 4th, the Elmira High School Oregon Battle of the Books team participated in the Region 3 North Regionals along with six other teams from our area. They came out of pool play as the top scoring team. They continued with wins against Crow, Creswell and won in the finals against South Eugene 80 to 75. The team of Jessica Coone (senior), Emily Eagle-Eye (freshman), Josiah Lorenz (freshman), and Jessica Woods (freshman) will be representing EHS Falcons and our region at State on Saturday, April 8th at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. GO FALCONS!!
On Saturday, March 11th, the Fern Ridge Middle School Oregon Battle of the Books team participated in the Region 3 North Regionals along with thirty other teams from our area. They came out of pool play and into the sweet sixteen in sixth place. They played Oaklea, St. Paul, Roosevelt and won in the finals against Meadowview 78 to 63. The team of Vanessa Coone (7th), Hayden Coone (7th), Gracie Storey (6th) and Zola Walker (7th) will be representing FRMS and our region at State on Saturday, April 8th at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. GO ROYALS!!

Fern Ridge School Dsitrict 28J is accepting applications to fill a vacant Budget Committee position. The following position is open: Position #1 (Expires 6/30/17). To be eligible for appointment, the appointive member must 1) live in the district; and 2) not be an officer, agent or employee of the district. Fern Ridge School District 28J is accepting applications to fill a four month appointment on the school board for Position #4. This appointment is through June 30, 2017. At the school board meeting last evening, Craig Soderberg resigned his school board position after serving 10 years on the Fern Ridge School District School Board. Thank you Craig for your years of dedication, commitment, kindness, knowledge, and work in helping make the Fern Ridge School District a great place for students to learn. Craig will be greatly missed!
The loss of seven school days over the last month has necessitated some changes in our calendar. The first issue that needed to be addressed was pushing back the end of the first semester. At the School Board meeting last night it was recommended, and subsequently approved, to change January 27th from a non-school day to a school day, and to change February 3rd from a school day to a non-school day. This effectively moves the end of our semester to Thursday, February 2nd. Please note this change on your calendars.
The second issue the board addressed was the potential of adding back days. While many options were discussed, including attending school on holidays, eliminating early release Wednesdays, attending during Spring Break, extending the school year, etc….two options were recommended for consideration. The first option simply has the school year being extended by 5 days, with the last school day occurring on Thursday, June 22nd. The second option has the end of the school year being extended by 3 days (ending on June 20th), with the other two days being identified and made up between now and the end of the school year (attending on Presidents Day, the Friday before Memorial weekend, another non-school day, etc)…..The board plans on making a decision at their next meeting on February 6th. Both options considered have us adding back 5 of the 7 days we have missed, and assume no more snow days. If we have more snow days, other adjustments will need to be made.
